Introduction to the Planetary Series

In this planetary series, we will journey through the major planets and points of the astrological natal chart—one by one—to help you understand yourself more deeply, heal consciously, and grow into your authentic life. For each planet, I will explore its core psychological meaning, then break down its expression through all twelve zodiac signs, and finally its placement through all twelve houses of the birth chart. We begin this series with the 3 major pillars of a natal chart: First with the Sun, the radiant center of your identity and life purpose. Next in the series will be the Moon, your emotional inner world and instinctual self, followed by the Rising Sign (Ascendant), which is the mask you wear and the way you step into life. These three form the foundational energy of any natal chart. From there, we will move through Mercury (mind and communication), Venus (love and values), Mars (action and desire), Jupiter (expansion and meaning), Saturn (structure and responsibility), Uranus (awakening and rebellion), Neptune (dreams and dissolution), Pluto (power and transformation), the Lunar Nodes (growth & karmic direction), and finally Chiron (the wounded healer). Each article stands alone, but together they build a complete psychological map for anyone ready to turn astrology into a tool for genuine self-understanding. Beware this can become addicting..lol, this is how I started. 🤩 Hope you enjoy!

The Moon as Your Emotional Blueprint

The Moon in astrology is not your conscious identity—it is your emotional home.

It represents:

  • Your instinctual, automatic reactions to life
  • What you need to feel safe, nurtured, and held
  • Your inner child and the voice of your earliest memories
  • How you give and receive emotional care
  • The body’s memory, your daily rhythms, and your subconscious patterns
  • This can also represent the home, family, or mother (whether you are a mother or your own mother)

If the Sun is the sky—visible, radiant, and directional—the Moon is the ocean beneath: deep, tidal, responsive, and always moving, even when the surface looks calm.

Without healing work, the Moon can become overwhelming floods of emotion, emotional numbness, or repeating cycles of unmet needs. With development, it becomes a wise inner compass that knows exactly what you need and how to ask for it.

The Moon in Nature: The Tides Within

Just as the physical Moon in nature governs the tides of every ocean, influences the life cycles of several species, marks the passage of months, and pulls at the very water within our bodies—so too does the astrological Moon govern the emotional tides within you. Without the Moon in the sky, the earth’s oceans would grow still and stagnant; without the Moon in your chart, your emotional life would have no rhythm, no intuition, no memory of what has nourished and healed you. The Moon provides the quiet, constant pull of your inner world—the part of you that feels before it thinks, that remembers what your mind has tried to forget, and that knows, beneath all logic, whether a place, a person, or a situation is truly safe.

The Moon’s Purpose

The Moon’s purpose is to help you develop a conscious relationship with your emotional self—one that can feel without drowning, need without shame, and nurture without exhaustion. It is not about being overly sensitive or irrational; rather, the Moon is your inner caretaker, the part of you that says, “This is what I need to feel safe, nurtured, and taken care of” and then spends a lifetime learning how to ask for it. Psychologically, the Moon’s purpose is to heal the wounded inner child—the parts of you that learned or was conditioned to suppress tears, to ignore your own needs, to parent others before yourself, or to fear that your feelings are too much. When you work consciously with your Moon, you stop asking “What am I supposed to feel?” and start discovering “What do I actually feel, beneath the should’s?”

Just as the physical Moon asks for nothing in return for its gentle pull on the tides, your inner Moon does not need to earn the right to feel. This is one of the most important planets in your chart, because it is your emotional truth, your instinctual wisdom, and the foundation upon which all other parts of you rest.

The Moon needs safety, repetition, and emotional honesty, but its deepest purpose is to blend and work with deep emotions: such as how to hold both your tenderness and your rage, your longing and your boundaries, and to express them as one coherent, feeling self. When the Moon is honored, you feel held, responsive, and deeply connected to yourself—like a tide that knows when to rise and when to fall. When it is neglected, you feel numb, anxious, or emotionally flooded—like a tsunami, flooding and crashing endlessly or lying eerily still. Ultimately, the Moon’s purpose is not to convince you that your feelings are valid—they are, just by existing, just as every wave, every tide, every drop of rain is valid in its own unique way. The Moon’s purpose is to help you grow into the full ownership of your emotional life, fully and without shame, because without you, your inner ecosystem—like the ocean without its moon—simply cannot find its rhythm.

What the Moon Needs (to feel whole and connected)

For the Moon to grow into its emotional self, it needs three core conditions: emotional safety, repetition without rigidity, and nurtured without conditions.

First, it needs to feel safe—truly safe—to express whatever arises, without being shamed, rushed, or fixed. The Moon does not respond well to “you shouldn’t feel that way.” Without safety, the Moon either floods (overwhelming emotion) or freezes (complete detachment or numbness).

Second, the Moon needs rhythm and repetition—daily routines, familiar spaces, predictable care. Unlike the Sun, which craves newness and direction, the Moon heals through consistency. A cup of tea at the same time each morning. A walk before bed. A weekly call with a safe person. These small anchors tell your inner child: “You are held.” From a psychological state, it tells your parasympathetic nervous system, the ‘rest and digest’ branch of your body, that you’re safe and all is well.

Third, the Moon needs to receive nurturance, not just give it. Many wounded Moons learned early that their job was to care for others while their own needs went invisible. Healing the Moon means learning to ask for what you need—and letting someone (even if that someone is you) provide it.

Finally, the Moon needs permission to feel everything—joy and grief, rage and tenderness—without having to justify, explain, or fix any of it. When these needs are met, the Moon softens into a wise, responsive inner guide. When they are ignored, the Moon becomes a wound that never closes. Healing the Moon means learning to become the safe parent your inner child always needed.

What the Moon Feels Like (inner experience)

Internally, when the Moon is healthy and honored, it feels like soft, steady knowing beneath your thoughts—a quiet hum that says “I am safe here” or “something is off” before your mind can catch up. You feel held, not because life is easy, but because you trust your own emotional responses. There is a sense of flow in your chest and permission in your belly—the freedom to cry without shame, to need without apology, and to rest without guilt. When the Moon is wounded or neglected, however, it feels restless or raw—like an exposed nerve, or an internal ache that won’t go away. You might feel anxious, forgetful of your own needs, or exhausted from the effort of keeping your feelings down. Imagine the ocean during a storm: chaotic, overwhelming, dangerous. Or imagine it frozen: still, silent, unable to move. Sometimes the wounded Moon feels desperately hungry for comfort—food, distraction, someone to hold you—and even when you get it, the comfort fades almost instantly. At its worst, a disconnected Moon feels like a house with no heat: functional enough, but cold, unwelcoming, and impossible to truly rest in. Healing the Moon returns you to that internal felt sense of I am allowed to feel. I am allowed to need. I am safe enough to let the tide move.

When honored and healthy:

“I am allowed to feel exactly what I feel. My emotions are not too much or too little. I know what I need, and I can ask for it. When I honor my inner world, life feels softer, even when it’s hard.”

When neglected or wounded:

“I don’t even know what I feel half the time. My emotions either drown me or disappear. I take care of everyone else. No one sees what I need. I’m exhausted, but I don’t know how to stop.”

How to Heal a Wounded Moon

A wounded Moon does not mean you are broken. It means your emotional self learned early that feeling was not safe—perhaps because you were punished for tears, ignored when you needed comfort, or forced to become an adult before you were ready. Healing the Moon is not about becoming less emotional or more emotional. It is about returning to the simple, radical truth that your feelings are valid, your needs matter, and you deserve to be held. Remember, your emotions are your internal guides, revealing what you genuinely need. When you’re disconnected from them, that guidance system becomes harder to hear—not broken, just waiting to be restored through healing and reconnection.

Here are seven practices to begin healing your wounded Moon:

1. Name your earliest emotional memory. Ask yourself: What did I learn about feelings as a child? Was crying allowed? Was anger punished? Was sadness met with comfort or dismissal? The Moon heals when the emotional rules of your childhood are brought into conscious awareness.

2. Create one small daily ritual that is just for you. The Moon heals through repetition. Light a candle and stretch your body before bed. Make some herbal tea and read a book. Take a short evening walk after dinner. It does not have to be profound—it just has to be yours and consistent.

3. Practice naming your feelings. Several times a day, pause and say: “Right now, I feel ______.” Try not to put any definite should’s to what you feel, unless you are learning or practicing how to listen to what your body needs. Example: “Right now, I feel irritable. I should do something that makes me feel calm, like take a shower.” Learn to witness what you feel. Sad. Angry. Tired. Peaceful. Anxious. The Moon heals when feelings are witnessed.

4. Ask yourself: What does my inner child need right now? Not what you “should” need. What the youngest, most tender version of you would actually love to receive, as care. A nap? A hug? Permission to cry? A blanket and a movie? Give it to yourself if you can.

5. Learn your Moon’s language. Some Moons need solitude. Some need touch. Some need to talk it out. Some need to move their bodies. Stop trying to heal your Moon the way someone else heals theirs. Learn your own emotional dialect.
-Fire Moons (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) need movement they process emotions through action, passion, and immediacy. They desire new experiences, spontaneity, and momentum.
-Earth Moons (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) process emotions through tangible experiences, comfort, and routine, so their “care” involves nurturing these natural tendencies through touch, taste, and physical presence.
-Air Moons (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) process emotions through thought, language, and social interaction. They thrive on talking through emotions, seeking feedback, and discussing feelings with others, they need that sounding board.
-Water Moons (Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces) process feelings through emotional resonance, psychic memory, and a heightened awareness of subtle energies. Water Moons need a safe, calm, and emotionally supportive environment, clear boundaries, grounding practices, and opportunities to release old emotional patterns. Practices like mindfulness, meditation, or grounding exercises can help them stay centered when overwhelmed.

6. Let the shadow speak without shame. Your Moon’s shadow—emotional flooding, numbness, neediness, caretaking to exhaustion—is not a flaw. It is a survival strategy that once kept you safe. When you notice it, say: “Thank you for trying to protect me. I am safe enough now to feel differently.”

7. Receive nurture, even when it’s uncomfortable. If you struggle to accept help, comfort, or care, start small. Let a friend bring you soup. Accept a compliment without deflecting. Say “thank you” instead of “I’m fine.” The wounded Moon often believes it must give endlessly and receive never. Healing means reversing that.

A final truth about healing the Moon: You will probably be working at healing a wounded Moon over your lifetime, always in stages, remember healing takes time and consistency. The Moon is not a machine; it is a tide that moves. The Moon itself goes through many cycles. Some days you will feel everything. Some days you will feel nothing. This is not failure. This is being human. Healing is simply the growing capacity to return to your own emotional center more quickly, more gently, and with less shame each time.

The Moon in Each Zodiac Sign (Positive & Shadow Expressions)

For every zodiac sign, the Moon expresses itself along a spectrum—from an integrated, healthy embodiment of that sign’s emotional gifts to a wounded, reactive version that reveals where healing is needed. No sign is inherently “good” or “bad”; rather, each sign’s positive expression emerges when the emotional self feels safe enough to feel authentically, while its shadow expression surfaces when fear, shame, or unmet needs distort the Moon’s natural flow into overwhelm, numbness, or control.

The following list offers a general overview of how the Moon’s positive and shadow expressions manifest across the twelve signs. Remember: everyone moves between both poles depending on life circumstances, trauma history, and conscious inner work. The Moon in Each House

The house that your Moon occupies is the specific area of life where your emotional world comes alive—where you feel most deeply, where your instinctual responses are triggered, and where you most need to feel safe and nurtured.

Think of the house as your emotional home base: the Moon does not perform there, but it cannot help but feel there. This is where your deepest needs live, where your inner child is most active, and where your subconscious patterns play out most visibly.

At the same time, this same house is also where your Moon’s shadow becomes most visible—where you might flood with emotion, shut down completely, or repeat old family patterns without understanding why. The house does not create the shadow; it simply reveals it, offering you a clear mirror for healing.

When you are living in alignment with your Moon’s house, you feel emotionally held, instinctively wise, and deeply connected to yourself—not because life is perfect, but because you have finally allowed yourself to need what you need. And when you neglect this area of life, you feel disconnected, insecure, anxious, or numb, often without understanding why.

The Moon’s house is not a burden or a test—it is an invitation to bring your full emotional truth to the part of life that needs your tenderness the most.

  • Where in my life do I ignore my own needs to care for others?
  • What does my Moon need today (safety, routine, nurture, solitude)?

The Moon is not meant to be “controlled.” It is meant to be consciously witnessed and tenderly held — shadow included.
