Astrology Reference Guide: Keywords and Symbols for the Planets, Zodiac Signs, and Houses

Signs, Planets, Houses & Aspects

Welcome to your Astrology Reference Guide — a tool designed to help you explore your own birth chart with curiosity and ease.

Start with your Sun sign: look up the keywords for your Zodiac sign, then combine them with the meaning of the house your Sun occupies. That blend gives you a powerful clue to what your Sun represents in your life.

The house shows where the energy is playing out. For example, a Sun in the 7th house suggests you shine in relationships — you find purpose through partnership and being seen by others. A Sun in the 3rd house points to learning, communication, siblings, or your local community as key areas for self-expression and purpose.

The Zodiac sign reveals how the energy of that planet is being expressed. An Aries Sun moves boldly, bravely, and independently. A Libra Sun seeks harmony, balance, and fairness. A Cancer Sun turns toward comfort, nurturance, family, and protection — that classic Mama Bear energy.

The Moon works the same way, but for your emotional world. Its sign describes how you feel, your emotional landscape; its house shows where those feelings come to life. A Taurus Moon, for instance, is grounded and practical with emotions. If that Taurus Moon lands in the 3rd house, you’ll likely need to talk things through — communicating your feelings in a stable, steady way to truly process them.

So go ahead — play with the keywords. Mix, match, and try them out in sentences. That’s how you’ll start to feel the real meaning behind the signs, planets, and houses.

Remember:

  • Houses = where in life this energy happens
  • Signs = how a planet (different parts of you) expresses itself
  • Planets = different parts of you

Now that you understand how signs, planets, and houses work together, let’s zoom in on the Zodiac signs themselves.

Think of each sign as a unique “style” or “flavor” of energy. When a planet — like the Sun or Moon — sits in a sign, it takes on that sign’s personality. The planet is what you’re expressing, and the sign is how you express it.

For example:

  • Aries expresses quickly, boldly, and independently.
  • Taurus expresses steadily, patiently, and with practical care.
  • Gemini expresses curiously, playfully, and through words or ideas.

In this section, you’ll find keyword lists for each of the 12 Zodiac signs. Use these keywords to describe how your Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, or any other planet operates in your birth chart.

As you read through each sign, ask yourself:

  • Does this sound like how I naturally react?
  • Does this match the way I love, communicate, or feel emotions?

The keywords are a starting point. Mix them with the house descriptions later to build a full picture of your chart — one layer at a time.

Now that you know how the Zodiac signs shape the way energy is expressed, let’s turn to the Planets — the what.

If the signs are the costumes, the planets are the actors.

Each planet represents a different part of you. Not the physical you, but the psychological and emotional you. Think of them as characters living inside your birth chart:

  • The Sun = your core self, identity, and life purpose
  • The Moon = your inner world, emotions, and instincts
  • Mercury = your mind, communication style, and how you learn
  • Venus = how you love, give affection, and find pleasure
  • Mars = your drive, passion, and how you take action
  • Jupiter = your growth, luck, beliefs, and sense of optimism
  • Saturn = your discipline, challenges, and life lessons
  • Uranus, Neptune, Pluto = your deeper generational and transformational energies. These are less personal and more generational meaning that everyone in the year you were born, mostly likely has these planets in the same sign, but not necessarily in the same house (that is only unique to you).

In your birth chart, every planet falls into both a Zodiac sign and a house. That means:

  • The planet represents parts of you.
  • The sign tells you how that part operates.
  • The house tells you where in life it plays out.

In this section, you’ll find keyword lists for each planet. Use them to describe your Sun, Moon, and personal planets first — then explore the outer planets as you go deeper.

As you read, remember: you are not just one planet. You are the whole cast, working together. For instance, it’s like looking at the whole body as parts of yourself, we would not look at just one body part, such as your arm, we would look at ALL OF YOU.

You now know the what (Planets) and the how (Zodiac signs). The final piece of the puzzle is the Houses — it’s the where.

If the planets are the actors (or parts of you) and the signs are their costumes (how they act), the houses are the stages where the performance takes place (what area in your life it plays out).

Your birth chart is divided into 12 houses, each representing a different area of life. The house a planet sits in tells you where that part of you will naturally express itself. It answers questions like:

  • Where do I shine? (Sun’s house)
  • Where do I feel deeply? (Moon’s house)
  • Where do I speak my mind? (Mercury’s house)
  • Where do I value, love, and attract? (Venus’s house)
  • Where do I take action? (Mars’s house)

A quick example:

  • A Venus in the 4th house means you express value, love, and affection most naturally at home, with family.
  • A Venus in the 10th house means you express value, love, and appreciation through your career, reputation, or public role.

Same planet, same sign even — but a different house changes everything.

In this section, you’ll find keyword lists for each of the 12 houses. Use them to understand where your planetary energy is being focused.

Quick reference:

  • Houses 1–6 = Represents your more inner personal life (self, money, communication, home, creativity, health)
  • Houses 7–12 = Represents more social and outward areas of life, that tend to involve others (your partnerships, shared resources, travel, career, friendships, groups you belong to, spirituality)

As you explore, remember: a house with no planets isn’t “empty.” It just means that area of life is less emphasized — but you’ll still experience it through the house’s/zodiac’s ruling planet. (Look to the zodiac signs-ruler, above this section, and that will tell you what planet rules that house)

Now let’s look at where your story unfolds.

1st House: Self, Identity, Appearance, how you see the world, image, Persona, Personal
Approach, Physical Body, Natural Disposition, Vitality, First Impressions

2nd House: Values, Possessions, Finances, self-worth, self-esteem, personal resources, personal

You’ve now explored the three core layers of your birth chart:

  • Planets — the what (different parts of you)
  • Signs — the how (the style or flavor of expression)
  • Houses — the where (the area of life)

If you stop here, you already have a rich and meaningful understanding of your chart. These three layers do most of the heavy lifting.

But there’s one more layer — the Aspects — for when you’re ready to go deeper.

Think of aspects as the conversations between planets. Do your planets get along? Do they challenge each other? Do they work together in harmony, or does tension push you to grow?

Aspects add nuance. They’re the difference between:

  • Two people in the same room (planets in same signs and houses)
  • Two people actually conversing or talking to each other (aspects)

For example:

  • trine (harmonious aspect) between your Sun and Moon means the inner (emotions) and outer (purpose or self-expression) naturally agree.
  • square (challenging aspect) between the same planets means your wants and feelings often pull in opposite directions — which can create growth through friction.

A quick note on weight:

Aspects are valuable, but they hold less weight than the signs, planets, and houses when it comes to core meaning. Think of your chart like an onion:

  • The center = planets, signs, houses (essential)
  • The next layer = aspects (adds a layer of richness)

You can understand yourself deeply without looking at a single aspect. But when you’re ready for more detail — when you want to know why certain parts of you feel in sync or at odds — aspects provide the answer.

So consider this section optional. Explore if you’re curious. Skip it if you want to keep things simple. Either way, your chart is already working for you.

When you’re ready: The following information below describes the major aspects — conjunctions, sextiles, squares, trines, and oppositions — and how to interpret them in your own birth chart.

Conjunction (☌): Combining Energies, Focus, New beginning, new cycle, merging of energies to
create something new, Unity, Power, Synergy, Intensified, Strong Emphasis

Sextile (⚹): Opportunity, Ease, Harmony, needs effort and action, you have to make things
happen, Cooperation, Creativity, Synergy, Potential

Square (☐): Challenge, Tension, Action, crisis, Internal pressure, need to pivot, effort to overcome, Motivates Action, Conflict, Need Resolution

Trine (△): Flow, Talents, Luck, Harmonious, easy, can stir trouble with laziness, Provides Support,

Opposition (☍): Awareness, Conflict, compromise, Need to find balance, tension, Often reflects
Relationship issues, Shows Opposites, Projection, Confrontation

Quincunx (⚻): Unease, Integration, Psychological in nature, Hard to see the other side, blind
spot, Need Adjustment, Tension, Hard to Resolve, Needs Awareness, Needs Insight (Shadow
Work), Usually Internal

You’ve now explored planets, signs, houses, and even aspects. But there’s one more way to look at your chart — not by individual pieces, but by the big overall picture.

That’s where Element Dominance comes in.

Every planet in your chart falls into one of the four elements based on the sign it occupies:

  • Fire Signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) = action, passion, inspiration
  • Earth Signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) = practicality, stability, the physical world
  • Air Signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) = ideas, communication, social connection
  • Water Signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) = emotion, intuition, deep feeling

By counting how many planets you have in each element, you begin to see your chart’s overall “personality fingerprint.”

What your element balance reveals:

heavy or dominant element (4 or more planets) means that way of being comes naturally to you. You identify with it easily. But there can be a shadow side — too much of any element can lead to fixation, rigidity, or getting stuck in one mode of operating.

For example:

  • Heavy Fire — You’re naturally passionate and bold, but may burn out quickly or struggle with patience.
  • Heavy Earth — You’re grounded and reliable, but may resist change or become overly focused on material security.
  • Heavy Air — You’re intellectual and social, but may overthink or struggle to connect with your emotions.
  • Heavy Water — You’re deeply feeling and intuitive, but may drown in emotions or struggle with boundaries.

When an Element Is Lacking (0–1 planets)

Lacking an element doesn’t mean you don’t have that energy. It means you have less ability to manage it — so when it does show up, it can feel overwhelming and difficult to balance. Without enough planets to ground and regulate that element, you may find yourself experiencing its shadow side more than its gifts. This means it takes conscious effort to work with these elements in your chart to help balance and help them grow. Think of it like a muscle, that takes effort in order to grow strong.

  • Lacking Water — You become overly sensitive and easily flooded by emotions. You may want to escape, numb out, or hide rather than feel.
  • Lacking Earth — You become overly productive, critical of yourself and others, or rigid in your routines. Rest feels like failure.
  • Lacking Fire — You have so much restless energy it’s hard to settle down. You just go, go, go — and crash when you finally stop.
  • Lacking Air — You ruminate and get stuck in mental loops, overthinking the same thoughts or patterns. You struggle to put words to what’s really going on in your head.

The car wheel analogy:

Think of the four elements as the four wheels on a car.

  • When all four wheels are properly inflated and aligned, the ride is smooth. You move through life with ease.
  • When one wheel is overinflated (dominant element), the car pulls in that direction. You may feel stuck in one way of being.
  • When one wheel is underinflated (lacking element), the ride gets bumpy. That area of life may feel wobbly or difficult to navigate.

The goal isn’t to eliminate your dominant element — it’s to become aware of it, appreciate its gifts, and gently invite the other elements in for balance.

How to use this section:

Below you’ll find descriptions for:

  • Fire dominant charts
  • Earth dominant charts
  • Air dominant charts
  • Water dominant charts
  • What it means when an element is lacking

Remember: element dominance is a bird’s-eye view. It doesn’t replace the detail of your planets, signs, and houses — it adds context. Use it to understand your natural tendencies and where you might want to invite a little more balance.

Fire (🔥): Aries, Leo, Sagittarius – Passion • Energy • Enthusiasm • Courage • Inspiration

Fire-dominant people radiate vitality and instinct. They move through life with boldness,
excitement, and a desire to create momentum. Their energy is expressive, animated, and
contagious — they spark ideas, ignite action, and bring warmth wherever they go. Fire thrives on
purpose, adventure, and the freedom to follow its impulses.

At its best, Fire is visionary, courageous, and uplifting. In shadow, it can become impulsive, reactive, or overwhelming.

Earth (⛰): Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn – Practicality • Stability • Groundedness • Productivity •
Reliability

Earth-dominant people are steady, dependable, and deeply connected to the physical world. They value structure, consistency, and tangible results. Their energy is rooted, methodical, and patient — they build, refine, and sustain. Earth brings practicality to dreams and turns ideas into form.

At its best, Earth is wise, grounded, and resourceful. In shadow, it can become rigid, overly cautious, or resistant to change.

Air (💨): Gemini, Libra, Aquarius – Intellect • Communication • Curiosity • Sociability • Ideas

Air-dominant people live in the realm of thought, language, and connection. They are observers,
thinkers, and communicators who thrive on conversation, learning, and mental stimulation. Their
energy is light, quick, and adaptable — always moving, questioning, and exchanging ideas. Air
brings perspective, innovation, and clarity.

At its best, Air is objective, insightful, and socially attuned. In shadow, it can become scattered, detached, or overly analytical.

Water (💧): Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces – Emotion • Intuition • Sensitivity • Depth • Healing

Water-dominant people navigate life through feeling, instinct, and emotional truth. They are
intuitive, empathetic, and attuned to the unseen layers of experience. Their energy is fluid,
receptive, and soulful — absorbing, sensing, and responding to subtle emotional currents. Water
brings compassion, imagination, and profound inner wisdom.

At its best, Water is healing, creative, and spiritually connected. In shadow, it can become overwhelmed, withdrawn, or entangled in emotional memory.

Conclusion
